Ford’s Relay for Life “Penny War” begins on Monday, May 2nd. This is a great way for all students to get involved! We will be competing with the other classrooms on our grade level to collect the most pennies. Students can bring pennies or even silver coins to help their class win. Please send in coins with your students this week to help support a great cause.
MONDAY - We had a different schedule today. Donuts for Dad was in the morning. We also took the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) in the computer lab. They took this earlier in the year so scores will be compared to measure growth.
We began our Earth Parent lesson. Student were given a scenario and they became soil scientists. Students reviewed the components of soil (sand, silt, clay, humus). They learned another name for soil is loam. They had to individually create a formula for the perfect soil. Students then worked in groups to create a group formula for the mixture of these components.
Tomorrow, with Earth Parent help they will create soil blocks using their group formula. These will then be used to grow plants and compare which group created the "perfect" soil.
We should be back on a normal schedule for the rest of the week.
Reading: They were given a Time for Kids lesson on money management. Students are to write on their own paper and in their own words a summary of each of the 5 steps.
Spelling: Spelling Sort #27. These words either have a vowel consonant vowel (VCV) (example: diner) or vowel consonant consonant vowel (VCCV) (example: dinner).
HW: Monday - Sort into the two categories on their own paper.
Math: Elapsed time. We will begin with reviewing telling time to the minute. Then continue the week with learning a number line method and a table method to determine a new time after some time has elapsed.
REMEMBER - if they forget their textbook, they can access it on-line (McGraw Hill link is on the resources page) and either copy or print the page.
HW: Monday - Textbook page 663 & 664
Tuesday - textbook pg 669 & 670

Reading: We will continue reading "The One and Only Ivan." We are reading this together and then writing different topics after sections. This is a fictional story based on a real gorilla that lived in captivity. There are links on the blog with videos and more information about the real Ivan.

We are trying to get back on a routine since testing is completed. Ms. Hargrove was out today.
