Math: Learned properties that help make our math easier by allowing us to regroup or understand that there is not a change.
HW: Text book pages 65-66 LA: Main Idea. Learned through a powerpoint about the main idea of a story. They then sorted words into groups and found the main idea of the words. Social Studies: Found Greece on a map. Spelling/Phonics: Group sorted words based on their sounds for or, ir, er and ur. HW: Write 6 sentences using 2 spelling words in each sentence. Ms. Hargrove was unexpectedly out sick today, but everyone still did a wonderful job. We wish her a speedy recovery.
Morning Work – we review several things each day. Students showed understanding of adding several 2 digit numbers using different strategies. They are also showing their knowledge of < and > signs. We also discussed different variations of the = sign and how you can have different math expressions as equal. Example: 6 + 4 = 17 – 7. The group reading was the beginning of the myth of Hercules. This fits with both our Social Studies unit of Greece, our word for today “ancient” and our character traits. We will continue this story later. We took our spelling test and a short assessment of rounding to 10’s and 100’s. CATO came today and we did a lesson on erosion and weathering as well as soil. Students did labs, wrote their observations and learned what these words mean. We went to the media center for our continued lesson on Destiny and how to find books they want. They were able to check out books today. Hope everyone has wonderful weekend! Math: We looked at different strategies to solve a word problem that involved subtraction with 108 and 42.
LA: We took an assessment of our knowledge of simple/complete subjects and predicates. Reading: We continued and finished our assignment on identifying character traits. Social Studies: We continued our notes on maps by learning the different types of maps: physical, political, climate, road, resources, and population. Computer Lab: We logged into the computer and learned how to create a cover sheet for their binders by learning the basics in a Word. They changed fonts, changed size, centered words, found on-line pictures and learned how to save to their school account. They will continue working on these and will later be allowed to print a color cover page for their binder. FLYER TODAY: 3D printing class info. FLYER TOMORROW: PTSA Directory Form. If you created a family profile in the Parent Portal they are just requesting you check it for accuracy. If you are not in the profile and want to be in the directory, complete the form. T-shirt orders and money are due this Friday, August 28th. We have to turn them in that day. LA: On Tuesday we continued learning about Subjects and Predicates using the School House rock video. Students then worked in pairs to find the complete subjects and complete predicates. The correct answers were reviewed together in class. Today they answered questions about the subject or predicate using a matching game. Using an interactive power point, we learned about Character traits and how they are different from physical traits. After doing an example together, students paired off and read different passages about a person. They then had to determine 3 character traits about that person and show their evidence in the text. Math: On Tuesday students created their own 100's number line to help with rounding to the nearest hundreds. As a class we practiced together in rounding various numbers. They then had to work independently on a worksheet to round. Spelling: Students learned another method to practice spelling words. They make a crossword out of two words. This is their homework for tonight. Social Studies: Tuesday we physically practiced directions: north, east, south, west. They also learned an acronym: Never (north) Eat (east) Soggy (south) Waffles (west). We also reviewed key mapping vocabulary words using a video and today we added these to our foldable notes. Today we were introduced to our Vermiculture unit (worm composting) by a guest speaker. She shared her worms and gave us information to help us take good care of our worms. We will be receiving our classroom set soon.
We also had a visit from our Guidance Councilor today. She played a jeopardy game with the students to see what they have learned about guidance services and about things offered at school. In social studies we completed gluing in our foldable and began by writing the broad and specific locations of ourselves (Earth, northern hemisphere, North America, USA, Georgia, Cobb, Acworth, street, address number). We also talked about the compass rose and directional coordinates. STEVI B's night tonight. Also information went home about Art club. We know you have been inundated with a lot of paper work and requests for money. It’s all part of the beginning of the school year, and hopefully will diminish soon. We appreciate your patience and quick responses.
Classwork was returned today. Ask your child where they made their mistakes and if they know what they did incorrectly. After warm up, students worked in pairs to review their spelling words. We then played Sparkle (ask your child about it) to review as a group. We took our spelling test. Math today was interactive. They had tiles of 0-9 and had to use them to answer worded questions (How many are in a dozen?, What is one more than a quartet?, ). The questions have both language arts, number understanding, and critical thinking. For Social Studies we got more notes cut and ready for our foldable and our map lessons for next week. We have created a SUMDOG class if any of our students want to practice their math facts at home. We cannot post the logins on the blog, and we have not gotten our Password Tracker so students do not have them yet. If you want the login for your child to practice at home, please e-mail Ms. Hess. We earned Fun Friday and ended the day interacting with our friends. A Class t-shirt order form came home today. Our class will have their own specific color. The shirt designs are for our 3rd grade.
We had pictures today. They all looked great! After morning work, we continued with Social Studies notes to be put in our foldable maps notes. Students wrote a flap book about the story Brave Irene. They gave details of setting, characters, problem, solution and supporting events as well as drew pictures of the beginning, middle and end of the story. Spelling was practiced using phonics and a white board. They had to listen to the individual sounds and begin to recognize the pattern and the correct spelling. Today we learned a new way to practice our spelling words. It is called Spelling Stairs. They completed 12 of their words in class. Their homework is to complete the other 12 words. Example: b br bro broo broom In math we worked on ordering numbers. Their homework is pages 23-24. In Social Studies we compared and contrasted maps vs globes. They are making a large foldable to hold smaller foldable/resources for vocabulary words and concepts for mapping. Performing Arts permission forms were sent home today. Please return as soon as possible.

We did a worksheet as a group and this was sent home. We visited the Media Center and learned the categories of books and the procedures for checking books out. They were also able to check out 2 books today. In math we reviewed patterns of numbers with 4 place values and their relationship to each other. We are experiencing some learning curves, which is why nothing has been posted since then.
We started our daily curriculum. Academics and subject content were begun. Students need to realize that we have high standards for their attention as they learn new concepts. They need to put forth their best effort and do their best work. Note: Ms. Hess was at an in-service on Monday to learn about Ford’s STEM program. PICTURE DAY: Thursday is school pictures.
