Ms. Hargrove was out sick on Monday, and will probably be out Tuesday as well. Ms. Hess is scheduled for training on Wednesday. Spelling: Sort #9. HW Monday: Spelling sort #9 HW Tuesday: Spelling city. Do any activity for sort #9 words to practice. Math: 4 times tables Monday we practiced drawing pictures of groups by randomly rolling a dice and making that many groups of 4 OR 4 groups of that number. They then wrote it in words and math. HW Monday: Make flash cards of their 4's HW Tuesday: Textbook page 387 Tuesday in class we learned that you can determine a multiple of 4 by finding 2 groups of the number. Example: 4x6 = 2 groups of 2x6 OR 2x6 + 2x6 = 4x6. Their homework will continue this concept. They can use their classwork to help with their homework. We will continue practicing with 4's. Social Studies/Reading: Center activities all week with reading and learning about the 3 branches of government: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. The vocabulary is very difficult for them so each station/center will continue to reinforce the main ideas and concepts. LA: Monday they continued to do homophones with a partner using verbal puzzles (ie: A piece of word with nothing to do = a bored board). Tuesday we will take our test on homophones/Sort #8 spelling using Spellingcity in the computer lab. They will be able to practice their words first using Spellingcity. The Ford Foundation Annual Campaign is going on now through November 6. This benefits our entire school AND our classroom. Please send in your contribution or let us know if you need more information. Thank you to those who already sent in your contribution.
Field Trip tomorrow. Wear clothing for wet, cold weather, comfortable shoes and their orange class t-shirts. Bring a disposable lunch. We leave around 9:15 and return around 1:30. It is at 5286 Austell Rd in Austell. Parents can drive their own car to join us if you want. It will be a great time!
We are glad to have Ms. Hargrove return fully recovered from her illness last week.
Ms. Hess however will be out on Wed, Thurs and Friday of this week. We will have a busy week ahead. Monday: Big Head fundraiser kick off. Can food drive kick off. Wednesday: FIELD TRIP - Wear your Orange Shirts. We are going to CATO. BRING OR BUY A SACK LUNCH. It all has to be disposable. Friday: $2 donation to foundation to wear their costume to school. Spelling Sort this week #Sort 8 - Homophones. HW: On a piece of paper they will put two columns and match the two words that are homophones. Homophones can be difficult for them to distinguish. Spelling City can help them because it will use them in a sentence. Later this week their homework will be to make a puzzle. The tab for this is on the 3rd Grade Resources tab, but it is also listed below. http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/WordSearchSetupForm.asp Math: Continue with 3's and 2's. Different worksheets will be given for each day. See their agenda for more details. 3rd Grade Resources Tab: Students were given updated passwords for Spelling City, Splash Math and Sum Dog. Please have them use these, along with Raz Kids for their homework. They have separate worksheets/assignments to do for homework, but these resources will help them even more. There are also several multiplication sites that can quiz them on each It was great to see everyone at the Fall Festival on Friday. Professor Hess was able to make an appearance.
Thank you for your patience this week. As we have conferences right after school, we have not had extra time for communication (the blog was not updated). Also, Ms. Hargrove was out sick on Tuesday, and still is not feeling well. Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to learn in our class and for those who had to reschedule conferences. Reading: We are reading together "The Box Car Children" the first of the series. The teacher is reading and they are following along. After each chapter they do a different type of activity on a foldable. We just finished chapter 4. This will be continued all week. Spelling: We are repeating last week's spelling list as it is more complicated and we did not have as much time in class last week to practice. HW Tuesday is "student choice." They may choose which ever method they would like to practice the words (rainbow, spelling stairs, spelling sort, etc). Math: We are working on our 3's this week. They made flash cards on Monday and on Tuesday they used their egg cartons to get random numbers to practice multiplying by 3. They took these home and may continue to use these for practice. As they learn more facts, they can use both place markers (two color counters) to find two factors to multiply together. It's a great way to keep them engaged with their multiplication. HW Tuesday: Textbook worksheet that continues with determining groups of as multiplication. LA: Yesterday they did a worksheet on possessive and plural. We will continue this concept this week. It is difficult for them to determine the difference in 's and s'. This will be an ongoing learning concept. Science: Today they used molds they created previously and modeled real life fossil creation. The animal dies and over time the actual bones, etc decay. There is a mold left by the decayed remains and this hole fills with sediment and minerals. Over time these harden and become the same shape as the bones, but they are not the bones. These are called Cast fossils. Students brought home their molds today. Touchtone testing is on Monday and Tuesday morning for math and reading. These assess what students should have learned this last nine weeks.
We are getting back on routine. Spelling: We reviewed the words for Spelling Sort #7. They have "aw" sounds. We will continue to practice these words in class and for homework. Math: We began multiplication. They made flash cards for their 2's. They are to practice these and become fluent this week. They will have practice assessments each day with a graded mult test on Friday. When they show mastery, they will move onto the next set of facts. The green tab to the right marked "3rd Grade Resources" has several websites to help practice with multiplication. The standard for 3rd grade is to be fluent with their facts. Social Studies: We continued our unit on Greece. We reviewed vocabulary words for this unit and discussed Greece's impact on the United States architecture and government. This week our guided reading centers will reinforce their impact. Grammar: We continued learning about parts of speech. Nouns were previously reviewed with proper and improper. This week we are learning the difference between concrete (person, place or thing) and abstract nouns (idea, thought). FORD HAPPENINGS: STEM Night on TUESDAY, Oct 12 Fall Festival on FRIDAY, Oct 16 CONFERENCE WEEK NEXT WEEK - Early Release Days Friday, October 9th, smencils will be for sale from 7:15-7:55 in Ms. Harrison's room for $1 each. A flyer went home last week.
Last Friday, Oct 2nd, was a science day. We went to the STEAM lab and observed and handled different minerals, fossils and rocks. We finished making our own rocks using crayon shavings and compared them with creating real rocks. We created our own mold fossil of a dinosaur which we will continue using this week. Our vermiculture unit was continued as we checked on our worms and wrote down our data and information. Today we took our Reading portion of the IOWA. Students also did their mile run in PE. We worked on math word problems. HW: NONE - They get the day off because we had reading today. IOWA TESTING: Monday - Reading Tuesday - LA Wednesday - Math Thursday - Science/Social Studies Please have your child well rested and full of breakfast for a productive testing day! CogAT testing began today. They did a great job on their first scantron, timed test. Testing continues this week and next.
Guided Reading Centers this week: Hargrove – Time for Kids “Fossils.” Read and answer questions about the article. Hess – Science text on Fossils. Read, learn and define the different vocabulary words and learn how fossils are formed. Independent Center – Look up definitions of the different mineral qualities. Make a fortune teller on rocks and practice with a partner. Lab Center – Using crayon shavings, create rocks using heat, pressure and extreme pressure. Analyze and relate created rocks to real rocks. Writing – Continued to analyze the author’s sentence. We watched a video on the author reading the book. We then created our own sentences with the style of the author’s and shared our work with the class. PICTURES CAME HOME TODAY. BOX TOPS COLLECTION ENDS THIS FRIDAY. HW: Read 20 minutes for each day this week. NOTE: We will have a substitute on Wed afternoon while Ms. Hargrove and Ms. Hess are in collaborative planning. They will continue learning about fossils and working on their math. CogAT testing starts tomorrow!! Get a good night’s sleep.
Math: We worked on 3 by 3 addition word problems together. We also started multiplication with the understanding that it is repeated addition and set up as “groups of” = 5 groups of 3 = 5x3 = 15 = 3+3+3+3+3 Writing: We broke apart last week’s sentence from the story and found synonyms for several words. We then rewrote the sentence using our own words. Guided Reading: We worked in groups reading Time For Kids with non-fiction information. We then answered questions about the text. Extension: We worked in pairs on a puzzle sheet where they were given 3 clues and the answers all had to rhyme. This was a challenge for them and will be part of their extension activities they are allowed to do after completing their classwork. HW: Due to testing for the next two weeks, we will only have reading homework. BOX TOPS are due on FRIDAY! We are currently in 4th place!! Please look in those cabinets and clips those Boxtops.
