We received our orange class shirts today. A lot of them changed into them today.
We continued learning how to write a good sentence. We also took the beginning of our writing assessment today - Write Score. This will be continued for the next two days. Reading group rotations were finished. Everyone has learned about minerals. There is more information for them on the green tab at the right "3rd Grade Resources." Have them take the "What is a mineral" quiz from the diamond page. Some students have already done this in class. There are also more advanced resources if they want an extension. We will begin rocks this week. HW: math pg 119 - basic computations Spelling worksheet Today was a very busy day.
We had a guidance lesson on communication. Students had to describe to a partner what to do or draw using only words. We then listened to a descriptive story while listening for proper nouns. After the story, the students began working in the LA journals. They were given a sentence from the story and they had to look for clues as to what made it a great sentence. (“Every Saturday she had hot biscuits, sweet butter, and Golden Eagle Syrup waiting on the kitchen table.” from Saturday and Teacakes.). We will continue to work on good writing throughout the week. After lunch our Earth Parent, Ms. Keszthelyi, taught about vermicomposting. With the help of another parent, Ms. Steinlight, the students added the different “ingredients” to our composting bin and then added the worms. We learned that the worms need a healthy mix of green and brown organic material, along with air and water. There were many questions. We discovered worms have 5 hearts, are not male or female- they are both, and that you cannot cut one worm into two. We also learned our worms like to live near the surface, but in the dark. We will begin collecting data on our worms and keeping them healthy and happy. A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR PARENT VOLUNTEERS! Several information flyers went home today. Box Tops for education competition has started- Yogli Mogli's for the winning class. Send in those labels :) HW: Read 20 minutes Spelling sort #6 - on a separate sheet of paper Math - pg 117 is information and pg 118 word problems to do using regrouping and rounding strategies. CLick this for an Information flyer from Cobb County regarding Office 365.
At Ford, students will use their First in Math password as their password for Office 365. We have begun Guided Reading stations this week. Thank you to all our parent volunteers and our RISE student Mr. Matthew for allowing us to teach in smaller groups.
Groups this week: Science – Reading and learning about mineral and rocks. Graphic organizer and answer questions. Reading – Fantasy called “Wolf” where they are inferring characters feelings and motives. Brochure was made. Math – Rounding group game/practice review. STEM – STEM journals were filled out and completed. These reviewed what STEM is and scientific practices. HW: Spelling #5 Tuesday – sort, Wed – rainbow words Math Chapter 2 Tuesday – lesson 5, Wed – lesson 6 Friday was assessment day.
We took two Common Core reading comprehension assessments. We practice this daily during the week, and Friday is our assessment of how well we are finding main idea and information from nonfiction text. We also took our spelling test today. Math: We worked in two groups with learning and practicing other ways to add using combinations of 10 or 100. Example: 469 + 324 = Add 1 to 469 to make it 470, but subtract 1 from 324 (making it 323) in order to keep it equal. It becomes 470 + 323 = ……. mental math is then done to get 793. SRI: On line reading assessment to determine their current Lexile score. School Information: Monday September 14 - National Anthem Day Please wear red, white and blue to school to celebrate the 201st anniversary of our National Anthem Georgia School Bus Safety Poster. Click this for the link for details. Social Studies: We watched a short video on Greece and reviewed the things we already learned. We then pair read and then group read about Ancient Greece and answered questions.
Math: We used white boards to write a number increased by 10 or 100. We then paired and did two worksheets on patterns that increased by 10 or 100. We also did a sort True/False on a number in the thousands place. LA: We read another Greek myth and discussed it’s connections to both our Greece topic and character traits. HW: Read Spelling Words: continue writing sentences using our spelling words Math: textbook pages written on Tuesday. Warm Up: We did corrections on a passage and found nouns and verbs. We also worked on Daily Common core reading with main idea.
LA: We have continued working on Main Idea of a passage using the interactive board with paragraphs. We then worked independently on identifying the main idea. Math: We learned how to use a True/False activity for determining the correct ways to represent and understand a number in the thousands. Science: Natalie shared about going to a hummingbird banding in the community. See the link below for her picture. http://m.accessatlanta.com/gallery/news/weekend-roundup-summer-shade-kennesaw-hummingbird-/gCWhX/?metatag=undefined#undefined Spelling: We watched a video about how “r” changes the vowels to different sounds: er, ir, or, ar, ur. We then did a worksheet using these vowel blends in words. HW: NO MATH *****We did not get far enough for them to do what is in their agenda. HW: Spelling – Create 6 sentences using 2 spelling words in each sentence. These are different words from what was on last night’s homework. Math: Learned properties that help make our math easier by allowing us to regroup or understand that there is not a change.
HW: Text book pages 65-66 LA: Main Idea. Learned through a powerpoint about the main idea of a story. They then sorted words into groups and found the main idea of the words. Social Studies: Found Greece on a map. Spelling/Phonics: Group sorted words based on their sounds for or, ir, er and ur. HW: Write 6 sentences using 2 spelling words in each sentence. Ms. Hargrove was unexpectedly out sick today, but everyone still did a wonderful job. We wish her a speedy recovery.
Morning Work – we review several things each day. Students showed understanding of adding several 2 digit numbers using different strategies. They are also showing their knowledge of < and > signs. We also discussed different variations of the = sign and how you can have different math expressions as equal. Example: 6 + 4 = 17 – 7. The group reading was the beginning of the myth of Hercules. This fits with both our Social Studies unit of Greece, our word for today “ancient” and our character traits. We will continue this story later. We took our spelling test and a short assessment of rounding to 10’s and 100’s. CATO came today and we did a lesson on erosion and weathering as well as soil. Students did labs, wrote their observations and learned what these words mean. We went to the media center for our continued lesson on Destiny and how to find books they want. They were able to check out books today. Hope everyone has wonderful weekend! Math: We looked at different strategies to solve a word problem that involved subtraction with 108 and 42.
LA: We took an assessment of our knowledge of simple/complete subjects and predicates. Reading: We continued and finished our assignment on identifying character traits. Social Studies: We continued our notes on maps by learning the different types of maps: physical, political, climate, road, resources, and population. Computer Lab: We logged into the computer and learned how to create a cover sheet for their binders by learning the basics in a Word. They changed fonts, changed size, centered words, found on-line pictures and learned how to save to their school account. They will continue working on these and will later be allowed to print a color cover page for their binder. FLYER TODAY: 3D printing class info. FLYER TOMORROW: PTSA Directory Form.
