Let us make it cozy after the snow storm. The theme of our first FuN Friday this year is Pajama/Slippers Day (Friday, January 29). For a donation of $1 students (and teachers/staff) could wear their favorite pajama and/or slippers to school this Friday. HMath: We are winding down multiplication. We will have our final timed multiplication test this Friday, Jan 29th. Based on how far they have learned their multiplication tables, they have earned different toppings for ice cream sundaes. We will have our Multiplication Celebration on Friday, Feb 12th. Please let our room moms know if you can help by supplying us with ice cream and toppings. Thank you in advance. Please have your child continue to practice all their multiplication facts. They need to be fluent to 10x10 before the end of the year. We will be using multiplication through out the year, but we will no longer be practicing facts in class. This week we will begin division. This is an area where quick recall of mult facts is very important. HW: 261 - 262 from their workbook Spelling: We are on Sort #18 with -ed endings and -ing endings. Spelling City has all the sorts available for your child to practice their spelling words each week. Reading: Students have been given homework in RAZ kids for reading. They should be taking a quiz after reading to help with comprehension. If they need to be moved up a level, please let us know. This homework counts towards Homework Club participation. Our reading in class has been based on Social Studies and Science information. We will also be exploring some winter themed reading as well. Social Studies: We have begun to study Mary McLeod Bethune. So far we have just introduced her with power points and group discussion. Students will begin to do on-line Pebble Go independent research to learn about how she diligently (vocabulary word) worked for equal rights and freedom for education. Science: We will have our test over Georgia regions of Coastal Plains and Ocean on Friday. A study guide came home last week. NOTE: We created a Quizlet study guide based on the specifics that they need to know for the test. It can be located by going to the 3rd Grade Resources Tab and clicking on the orange Q at the bottom left. Students can flash card themselves as well as take practice tests. We will be sending home actual flash cards for them to make as well. UPCOMING INFORMATION: Tuesday: Puppet show about the watershed. Wednesday: Photo Day for students who were not here during original picture day. Friday: Regions test, spelling test and final mult timed test. Math: We continue learning about area, that it is in square units and how to draw a picture that represents a specific area. HW: Monday: Page 769 Tuesday: pg 775 Wednesday: pg 781 (?) Spelling: Sort #16. HW: Monday: Sort sheet made for them and they are to write their words in the sort. Tuesday: Multiplication Spelling Wednesday: Area spelling Thursday: Sort pg 65 and 66. Reading: We are learning to find main idea and details in order to summarize. We will be reading about habitats and how scientists study animals and use that information for humans. HW: Monday: Raz Kids - read and quiz The following home work will be given to them. They will read and answer questions. Tuesday: "A Giant in the Library" Wednesday: "Cow Poems" Thursday: "From Practice to Performance" Language Arts: Quotation marks will be learned for dialogue. Social Studies: We will continue learning about Susan B Anthony. The class did a lot of roll playing last week and we watched the School House Rock video on Suffrage. We also saw the Mary Poppins clip that addresses this issue and looked at Susan B Anthony coins. This week we will work independently reading and answering questions about Ms. Anthony. Science: We continue learning about the Georgia regions with Swamp and Marsh. Animal adaptations will also be explored. Welcome Back! We hope you all had an enjoyable and restful break. School News: WEAR ORANGE CLASS T-SHIRT ON FRIDAY!! We will be having an in-school field trip with CATO. With the cold weather, please dress your child in layers. The school temperature sometimes fluctuates. We also take them out for recess in the winter so they need their heavy jackets. PUBLIX NIGHT IS Thursday, January 15th from 6:30-8pm. Flyer coming home soon. This week: Math: We are learning how to find the area of different shapes (not just rectangles) by counting the units that make up the shape. This will help in our full understanding of what "area" is. Homework: Tuesday: worksheet on finding areas by counting Wednesday: finding area by counting, multiplying and adding Thursday: Word problems involving area in real world Spelling: Spelling Sort #15 - suffix rules for adding the -ing ending. This concept will continue for the next couple of weeks with a few rules each week. This week is when to double the last consonant if it has a consonant, vowel, consonant and to just add -ing if there is a vowel, consonant, consonant. Homework: Tuesday: Spelling Sort - 4 columns. Wednesday: Spelling City - specific assignment when they log in. Thursday: Spelling Sort - both sides of paper Social Studies: We are studying Susan B Anthony. We began today by looking up the definitions of vocabulary words relating to her life story. We will be reading about her and answering questions for each chapter. The goal is to understand how she fought for other's rights and had determination. Science: We reviewed briefly about the Piedmont region by looking at the live feed of Berry College's eagle. A link is now available on the 3rd Grade Resources for this site. This week we will continue other Georgia regions such as the Coastal Plains and Barrier Islands/Sea. Spelling: Sort #14 More contractions Reading/Science: We will be learning about other regions in Georgia - Swamp/ Marsh and Ocean. Language Arts: We continue to learn about verbs - regular and irregular. Writing: We will be given another writing prompt this week. They did a GREAT job on their writing last week. Math: We start division. Division can be thought of in several ways: repeated subtraction, equal sharing, and equal grouping. We will learn that it is the inverse of multiplication. Events this week: Thursday: Class Party 12:30-1:30. Students are asked to bring a wrapped new chapter book for a book exchange. Please mark whether the book would be enjoyed more for a boy or a girl. Friday: Ford Foundation FuN Friday on December 18. Its theme is Holiday Dress Up. For a donation of $1 students could wear their favorite holiday attire (dress, jumpsuit, pajamas…) or accessories (hat, headband…) to school on Friday. Friday: Earth Parent lesson on soil and it's properties. Holiday Shopping began this Tuesday and continues through Thursday. Send in any money and information to help your child shop.
Spelling: Sort #13. Contractions. There is a spelling sort #13 on Spelling City, however they need to practice understanding how to change to a contraction. Homework will be worksheets for them to change words into contractions and vice versa. Math: We continue to work on subtraction with regrouping. Monday HW: page 175 & 176 Tuesday HW: page 177 ONLY Wednesday HW: Christmas word problems #1-6 Thursday HW: Christmas word problems #7-12 Social Studies: Frederick Douglass test on THURSDAY. Study guide went home over the weekend. There is a Quizlett attached to the 3rd Grade Resources tab for Frederick Douglass to study as well. Science: We continue regions of Georgia by learning the Swamp and Marsh region. Language Arts: We are writing a persuasive essay on why Santa should still give presents to someone who is not so good. They get to pick their "bad guy." These are characters from stories or movies (evil step moms from different fairy tales, Grinch, Ursula, Cruela-de-Vil, Count Olaph, etc.). This project has been segmented. Monday: Brainstorm bad guys. Tuesday: Pick a bad guy and draft Wednesday - Friday: Draft, prewrite and possible final. This Thursday and Friday Advanced Ed and STEM individuals will be coming around the building. Your child might be asked questions about what they do regarding STEM. We will be working on a project where we keep our Snowman cold using different materials. Media Center HOT CHOCOLATE on Wednesday this week. The week before break the class learned about two of Georgia's regions: Piedmont and Mountain. A study guide went home and a Remind notice was given for them to study this. Under the "3rd Grade Resources" tab, there I a link to a Quizlet for them to study. If they do the flash cards they will need to click for the term to show. Each question is really designed for them to answer which region. Hopefully they will also learn the other facts while reading the terms/statements. When we return from Thanksgiving break we will begin formally subtracting with regrouping. We have started some of this as a class. Make sure they are practicing their next multiplication facts. Spelling sort #12 is next week. They can always use Spelling City to practice these words. We will continue to learn about the regions of Georgia for Science. Please help our Thanksgiving Feast flow smoothly by returning the RSVP on the bottom portion of this page by Wednesday, November 11th. Plan to arrive 10 minutes prior to your child’s scheduled Thanksgiving Feast to purchase your lunch tickets in the front lobby of the school. Lunches will cost $3.50 for all guests (adults and children that are not students). The lunch menu is turkey & stuffing, a roll, a choice of 3 sides, carton drink or cup of tea, and a dessert. Ms. Hargrove was out again today. Ms. Hess was in training today. Hopefully all went smoothly.
Below are the plans that were left for the subs. They had some liberty with the different activities, but the basic outline is below. REMINDER: Big Head contest ends this week. They are donations to Ford Foundation. Any donation is accepted and will help out class. HW - Math: page 377 & 378 in their workbook. If they did not tear it out, they can look online in the online textbook. Their passwords should be in their password tracker. Spelling: Spelling stairs of their words. PARENT REMINDER: If your student has difficulty with doing all the words, ie; they take a VERY long time, then please sign off that you have decided they are done. We will accept that. Math: They are working on their 4's. They took another practice test today. Look at their results from Tuesday's test to see what they need to practice. Timed test is Friday. In class they did a worksheet on 4's. Social Studies/Reading: They continued learning about the 3 branches of Government. Different worksheets were left including flip books and organizers. Possible reading of the BoxCar children and/or grammar worksheets. Ms. Hess will return on Thursday. |
