To kick off our second grade PBL (project-based learning), Mr. Kahle presented Monarch Butterflies' Symbolic Migration in our learning commons. He taught us the important parts of caterpillars and butterflies, like mandibles and proboscis, that allow them to thrive in their indigenous habitats. The Monarch Man shared photo slides and information on milkweed pollinators, life cycles, determining males vs. females (no spots on back of abdomen), 5 instar stages of chrysalis, hatching, molting, drying, tagging, releasing, and watching fall migration routes online @ Journey North's website. We hope to get tags from Mr. Kahle in the near future, so we can watch their arrival in the Oyamel Forest of Mexico.
A great field trip to the Fire Safety Village was had by all! Instructor Smith provided an excellent program for life safety as it is the Division's mission to educate the public in order to reduce preventable injuries and death.
Our class participated in a variety of segments on gun safety, pedestrian safety, bus safety, fire safety, stranger danger, and personal health in regards to habits and immunizations. Our day was packed full and students were intrigued and entertained. I think the student highlights were riding bicycles, watching a puppet show, crawling around in fake smoke, and exiting a bedroom window using an escape ladder. Ask your child who got to call 911 and report that we made it to our safe spot (the big tree in the front of our firehouse) on 911 Main Street, Marietta. GENERAL INFORMATION:

MONDAY - We had a different schedule today. Donuts for Dad was in the morning. We also took the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) in the computer lab. They took this earlier in the year so scores will be compared to measure growth.
We began our Earth Parent lesson. Student were given a scenario and they became soil scientists. Students reviewed the components of soil (sand, silt, clay, humus). They learned another name for soil is loam. They had to individually create a formula for the perfect soil. Students then worked in groups to create a group formula for the mixture of these components. Tomorrow, with Earth Parent help they will create soil blocks using their group formula. These will then be used to grow plants and compare which group created the "perfect" soil. We should be back on a normal schedule for the rest of the week.
